Trout
East Tennessee is blessed with some of the best trophy trout waters in the country.
The South Holston River, Fort Patrick Henry and Watauga River are tailraces and are
home to 7,000-11,000 trout per mile as well as some of the largest trout in the
country. These pristine rivers are teaming with many different species of aquatic
insects that hatch throughout the year, making them a year-round fishery.
You can expect to catch some of the prettiest brown and rainbow trout found anywhere. There are also hundreds of smaller mountain streams that hold trout within an easy drive from EFO. Many of these streams hold our southern gem, the Appalachian strain brook trout. They have an aggressive appetite, especially for dry flies, with an other-worldly paint scheme.

Smallmouth Bass
These feisty fish can be found in large numbers and size in the Nolichucky and
Holston Proper Rivers. Both are considered by many famous anglers to be some
of the best bass fishing rivers in the country. East Tennessee smallmouth bass
are usually aggressive feeders that will readily take a fly, and because they live
in a river, these ‘river smallies’ are incredibly strong for their size and put up a
terrific fight. Plus, they eat poppers. Who doesn’t like catching fish on poppers?

Striped and Hybrid Bass
Every year we look forward to the spring, summer and fall months because that’s when these awesome fish show up busting on the surface of Boone Lake and move
up into the lower ends of the Watauga and South Holston Rivers. They can be a
challenge on the fly, but they pull hard enough to make it worth your while! They are readily caught, though and we offer guided tours in season (usually April to November) in pursuit of these amazing fish.
Half day trip for 1 or 2 people: $500.

Carp and Gar
Carp and gar. The most under-rated game fish that we target. We have been fly fishing to them for years now but they are quickly becoming popular game fish to chase with a fly. They are smart, challenging and a hilariously fun fish to catch with a fly rod. If you have never fly fished for them before, put the stigmas aside and come on a trip
with us at EFO and I dare you not to smile or laugh when you hook your first one on a fly!
Half day trip for 1 or 2 people: $375.

Night Float Trips
Few things are quite as unique or as exciting as slipping a drift boat in a quiet section of the river, throwing mouse patterns after the sun has set and the giant brown and rainbow trout are on the prowl for an easy meal just scooting along the top of the water.
As you are slowly stripping your fly, making a subtle wake on the surface, be prepared for a violent explosion on your fly!! Most giant trout in the 20”-30” range are taken on fly at night on the South Holston and Watauga. This technique has its own challenges, but if you are ready for something totally different and totally fun, the night game is for you! |
